The Graduate Student Emergency Loan Fund (GSELF) was established by the Graduate Student Organization to provide short-term loans to graduate students who are in need of money on an emergency basis, and who do not have alternative means of obtaining a loan. Emergencies include but are not limited to, the death of an immediate family member or a medical emergency for the student or an immediate family member. Emergencies do not include any financial penalty for which the student had prior knowledge. Examples of excluded conditions include routine car repair & maintenance, tax payments, and late paychecks.

GSELF loans are interest free and are funded by contributions from graduate students of Stony Brook University. The loan must be repaid within three months.
