Now Hiring: Graduate Student Advocate

The GSO and graduate school are hiring two graduate student advocates: Doctoral Student Advocate and Master Student Advocate.  Find the job description here.
The position starts in August 2017 and ends in June 2018,
The compensation is a full Tuition Scholarship and $19,360 for the academic year,
Some of the main responsibilities are: i) assisting students in the solution of difficulties encountered relating to both academic and personal matters, ii) providing campus resources to students, iii) providing assistance to Graduate School for various events (i.e. orientation; commencement week and other annual events), and  
iv) development of events: professional/ career development; workshops and symposiums catered to Masters and Doctoral students

Application Requirements: 
1. A cover letter describing why you want to be the graduate student advocate and what makes you the best candidate for the position.
2. A resume.
3. Recommendation letters are optional.

Dear Graduate Students, the elections are now live on SOLAR!  Log-in to your SOLAR account (, go to "Elections" and choose "Student Elections".   You can read statements from candidates on SOLAR before you vote or on the election page of this website.

Sprintax (Tax Filing Code)


You can file your taxes online as an international student with a code from the GSO. All you need to do is:
(1) Register and follow the simple instructions here:

(2) Complete the online questionnaire

Enter the code SSB2016B for Federal tax filing and the code SSB20165 for State tax filing in the box on the ‘Review your order’ page.

Sprintax will prepare your tax return and check if you are due a refund.
After you enter all your information, you will pay $2 for Federal and $20.95 for State.


GSO Art Contest


The Stony Brook University GSO, HeForShe Chapter, and Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GWiSE) are pleased to announce the second annual Art Contest with the theme of Gender Equality. The contest is open to all Stony Brook students currently enrolled in a certificate, undergraduate, master’s or doctoral program and Stony Brook affiliated postdocs. Find the link here:


GSO Elections


The deadline for nominations for the GSO Executive Committee is coming up! You don't have to be a GSO senator to run - you just need to come to at least 2 Senate Meetings (the next 2 are March 7th and April 4th at 5:30 PM) and have a GPA above 3.0! We need candidates to run in order for democracy to function! 
The annual compensation for the positions are $5,500 for President and Treasurer and $4,500 for Vice President and Secretary.
Nomination forms are available on the GSO website at and are due in the GSO Office, SAC 227, no later than5:00 pm on Friday, March 31
