Below you can find information on how to become a Senator orrun for an Executive Committee position.
How to join the Senate:
- If you are a new Senator, you can confirm your seat in one of two ways:
- Hold an election in your department through a meeting or by ballot.
- Petition to be a senator by collecting signatures of at least 30% of the students in your department or 50 students from your department, whichever is less.
- If you are a returning Senator, you may follow any of the procedures above, or you may post a Call for Nominations for New Senators in your department. If there are no other interested candidates after making the open call advertising the GSO positions available in your department, please provide the GSO-Secretary with a copy of the 'Call for Senators' e-mail distributed to your department. You will then be appointed as a senator. Realize that being a senator last year DOES NOT automatically make you a senator this year as well.
If you are interested in becoming a senator you need to submit the relevant paperwork at least 72 business hours before the Senate meeting you wish to attend as a Senator. For example, if a meeting is on Tuesday you need to submit the application by Thursday at 5:00pm at the GSO office.
Here is a presentation for all the new senators.
How to become an Executive officer:
Candidates for office must be members of the GSO. The officers of the GSO shall be chosen in a membership-wide election held in the month of April, in accordance with the Elections Bylaws. Candidates are elected by a plurality (the largest number) of all votes cast for the office. Should the membership-wide election result in a tie vote, the Senate shall vote to decide which of the candidates shall become the officer. Newly elected officers shall take office on July 1 and shall serve through June 30 of the following year.
No member shall hold more than one office at a time. The offices of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer shall have two-term limits. No member shall hold an office and be a GSO Senator at the same time. Only individuals who are qualified to serve in the office of President may serve in the office of Vice President.
In order to run for a position on the GSO Executive Committee, please feel out the form attached and provide signatures from at least 25 GSO members (graduate students that pay GSO activity fee)
